Challenge

Recruited by startup’s co-founders as an initial hire for news org dedicated to providing the best journalism in New England’s second-largest city. Venture was recognized nationally as a bold experiment in sustainable, subscription-based hyperlocal media.

Methods

Introductory tasks included copy editing all submissions. Expanded responsibilities earned during three-year tenure included researching and authoring articles, headlines, editorials and irreverent event listings; preparing all content for publishing through WordPress CMS (including SEO functions); and proofreading weekly print edition.

Challenge

Stepped forward on emergency basis to invigorate outdated online presence of highly-regarded community theater, increase visitor engagement and grow web audience.

Methods

During three-year tenure, created and maintained all WordPress-based website assets and overall functionality. Researched and wrote theater-related news. Handled social-media duties and SEO strategies. Positioned as contact person for all online communication.

Outcome

  • Demonstrated audience-building acumen by nearly tripling monthly Web traffic within six months of hiring.
  • Designed, developed and administered dynamic, responsive website to replace static, non-mobile-friendly precursor.
  • Enlivened formerly staid presence through frequent delivery of updates and original content.
  • Inaugurated and authored SRT personality profiles, show-review synopses, list of Stageloft-specific amenities and FAQ section.
  • Constructed cost-free newsletter-subscription functionality using open-source software.
  • Expanded photo galleries, and enhanced their appeal with slideshows, review links and identities of all show participants.
  • Researched and produced informative series of “Did You Know?” vignettes to educate visitors and spotlight theater’s two-decades-plus history.

Challenge

Recruited to create and administer full web presence for historic, 150-member church with no previous internet exposure. All work during five-year tenure volunteered as a community service.

Methods

Designed, developed and administered website assets and maintained overall functionality. Responsible for content creation and publishing through WordPress CMS. Attended and reported on important church events. Handled all web-based communication.

Outcome

  • Created media-rich website offering potential congregants an extensive view of the church’s mission, leaders, amenities and activities. Frequent updates allowed far-flung former attendees and health-challenged members to maintain a vital connection.
  • Employed journalism and marketing skills to provide comprehensive, year-long promotion and coverage of church’s 250th anniversary. Efforts ensured a successful series of well-attended events.
  • Used historical research training to help compile well-received list of church milestones that educated members and web visitors.
  • Recorded weekly sermons and crafted helpful synopses to accompany website audio links.
  • Videotaped, edited and posted milestone events and holiday concerts to YouTube channel.
  • Church pastor commented at tenure’s end that “I got a lot of positive feedback on its layout and appearance. It was the nicest church website around.”
  • Contacted by area churches seeking a similarly robust online presence.

Create a mobile-friendly website to educate gardeners, from neophyte to seasoned, about the elements and flora required to successfully design and plant a Shakespeare-themed garden.

Methods

Employed design and HTML/CSS coding skills to forge static-yet-engaging site. Used copy-editing abilities to vet information and web links provided by client. Utilized research expertise to enhance supplied content with additional, relevant links and entries.

Outcome

  • Secured prime, shakespearegardens.com domain name for easy reference and SEO jumpstart.
  • Fashioned readily navigable site with multiple points of entry for key content.
  • Augmented design with animated header background and era-evocative typefaces.
  • Impressed client with design choices and content contributions, and speed of project delivery.
